Abstract
Every coin or banknote reflects a piece of history. Coins, whether metal or paper, testify to historical events and figures through various symbols. They play a key role in political, diplomatic, economic, and artistic spheres. The portrayal of women on coins and banknotes has been a common practice for centuries. This paper aims to present the image of women on Albanian coins and banknotes across different historical periods and to explore their role in the development of society. The presence of women on currency symbolizes their important and powerful role in society, equal to that of men.
Keywords: image, woman, coin, banknotes, symbol, society, history, country.
Background
The article examines how banknotes function not only as economic instruments but also as cultural and symbolic artifacts that reflect and promote national identity. Currency carries visual and ideological messages about a nation’s history, values, and collective memory, making it a powerful everyday medium of communication.
The study situates itself within broader discussions of national symbolism, emphasizing that imagery such as historical figures, landmarks, and cultural motifs plays a key role in shaping how a nation represents itself.
Methods
The article adopts a qualitative and interpretive approach, focusing on the visual and semiotic analysis of banknote designs. It examines symbols, images, and figures depicted on currency and interprets their meanings in relation to national culture and identity.
This includes analyzing historical personalities, architectural landmarks, and cultural symbols within their historical and sociopolitical context.
Results
The findings show that banknotes play a significant role in promoting national identity by embedding cultural narratives into everyday economic life. They frequently depict historical figures, national heroes, and important cultural symbols that reinforce collective memory.
These visual elements foster emotional connection, national pride, and a sense of belonging, while also communicating messages of progress, unity, and heritage.
Conclusions
The article concludes that banknotes are powerful cultural tools that extend beyond their economic function. They act as carriers of national identity and reinforce cultural heritage through symbolic representation.
Despite globalization and the rise of digital payments, banknotes remain relevant as tangible expressions of identity, balancing cultural storytelling with modern functional requirements.
