Memory in Motion: AI-Mediated Storytelling Across Languages, Classrooms and Generations

Abstract

This review examines the role of AI-mediated storytelling in multilingual and culturally diverse educational settings, highlighting its potential to support language learning, cultural identity, and intergenerational memory. It proposes a conceptual framework in which AI functions as a narrative mediator that enhances storytelling while preserving human creativity, agency, and authentic expression.


Methods

The study adopts a narrative review approach, synthesizing interdisciplinary research on AI, digital storytelling, multilingual education, heritage language learning, and intergenerational memory. Existing theoretical frameworks and educational literature are integrated to develop a conceptual model and identify effective pedagogical practices.


Results

The review indicates that AI-supported storytelling can enhance multilingual communication, learner engagement, digital literacy, and cultural expression while facilitating the preservation and sharing of intergenerational narratives. However, it also identifies challenges related to authorship, algorithmic bias, transparency, equitable access, and the risk of overreliance on AI.


Conclusions

AI-mediated storytelling offers considerable educational value when implemented through human-centered pedagogy and ethical instructional design. The authors conclude that AI should be used as a collaborative partner that supports, rather than replaces, human creativity, helping learners connect language, culture, and memory across generations.
