Enhancing Communicative Language Learning through Digital Tools and Generative AI

Abstract

This review explores how generative AI and digital tools can enhance communicative language learning by fostering learner autonomy, critical thinking, and personalized learning experiences. It also discusses the challenges of AI integration, including misinformation, hallucinations, and ethical concerns, while advocating for the responsible use of AI as a complement to human teaching.



Methods

The article adopts a narrative review approach, drawing on interdisciplinary literature and the authors' classroom experience to examine the role of AI in language education. Practical teaching activities and real-world examples are presented to illustrate effective strategies for integrating AI into communicative language learning.



Results

The review shows that AI can improve learner autonomy, provide immediate feedback, support prompt engineering, and promote higher-order thinking skills through interactive learning activities. At the same time, it identifies limitations such as AI hallucinations, overreliance on technology, and risks to academic integrity that require careful educational guidance.



Conclusions

Generative AI has significant potential to enrich language education when used responsibly and alongside human instruction rather than as a replacement. Educators should emphasize ethical AI use, critical evaluation of AI-generated content, and learner-centered approaches to prepare students for future academic and professional environments.
